Decision Recognizes State of Competition and Reduced Need for
Burdensome Regulations
OLYMPIA, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Frontier Communications (NASDAQ: FTR) applauds the decision by the
Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (WUTC) finding that
Frontier faces effective competition with regard to basic residential
and business local exchange services.
According to the Order released by the WUTC, “Convergence of
technologies, providers, and competition is making historic government
regulation outdated, as voice, video, and data are quickly becoming just
packets of information carried on the same networks.” In recognition of
this marketplace reality, the WUTC agreed that traditional rate
regulation no longer serves the public interest and that such regulation
“should give way to the discipline of the competitive marketplace.”
Kathleen Abernathy, Frontier’s Executive Vice President for External
Affairs, recognized the importance of this decision and said “as pointed
out in the Order, there has been a dramatic marketplace and
technological transformation that benefits consumers with increased
choices and options. CLECs, cable companies, wireless companies, and
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers, in addition to
traditional wireline incumbents, offer services to both business and
residential consumers. The WUTC decision recognizes that regulations
should neither advantage nor disadvantage the competitors serving the
customers. Consumers will continue to benefit from technological
innovation and increased choices.”
